Running, swimming and biking buddies for well over a decade, Chrissy and I have achieved modest goals like swimming at the Oahu Club masters swim program, cycling a half Century ride and finishing the Seawheeze half marathon. While we dreamed of completing a triathlon it felt elusive and unapproachable. That all changed this week.
On a serendipitous stop at Island Triathlon & Bike (ITB) we met Will Mather. Will, a ranked professional athlete and ITB’s triathlon coach, has established a high caliber group training plan based on his decades of experience, understanding of performance metrics and access to high technology tools. That alone is impressive, however there were other revolutionary components included in this program that resonated with us. For example, coaching is scheduled for six days a week, each member works toward personal training goals and most important to us – Will and the entire ITB crew’s mission is to provide a supportive environment where fun and community are emphasized. They invited us to take our time, ask questions, and hang out. So we did.
Over the last week we have been to ITB everyday. We already feel like family after working with Will, Carl, Ed, Matt,Valerie and Rie learning about bike basics and the Honu Half Ironman 70.3 miles. The miles are comprised of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile ride and a 13.1 mile run to the finish line. CHEE HOO!
Here we are on the Guru fit system to determine our optimal bike specifications. The fitting session took between 60 to 90 minutes and was a stand alone workout, so let us offer a tip – come fresh. Both Chrissy and I had ran and biked the morning of our fit and oh là là we were tired.
Getting the low down at the triathlon orientation held at ITB. Will wants to make sure we’re all clear on the program and opens the floor to questions.
