The Kailua Outpost is a mixed use retail space that is home to Aloha Beach Club and The Local Hawaii. Aloha Beach Club has a robust online store but built this brick and mortar outpost for the community to physically connect with their brand. We laughed, learned, and shared a shave ice. Time flew by and here’s why – the Outpost is built on the same foundation as the brand- JOY.
If you don’t know what brings you joy, start with things close to your heart. Marie Kondo, author
Kamohai Kalama was our host and he entertained us with a tidbit about the genesis of Aloha Beach Club Aloha Shirts.
His story is about him, his brother, their dad and the occasions that necessitated “a loan” of one of their dad’s Aloha shirts. Their father, a banker, owned a variety of Aloha Shirts (standard business attire in the islands). The boys “swam” in the traditional shirts which are big and boxy and wished for more flattering lines. Now, not only do they own shirts that fit well, they make them for themselves and those who want them too.
“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.” Marie Kondo, author
The Outpost’s tidy space, like Kamohai, put us at ease. Like many consumers today what we choose to buy, where we buy it and how it is made are all factored into our decision to own. The Aloha Beach Club entrepreneurs (ahem – surfers) are like minded and we felt their commitment to Hawai’i crafted products and to promoting positive retail/life experiences. Aloha Beach Club designs and manufactures tailored crisp surf and aloha apparel locally and this tribe has successfully merged their surf culture, aloha wear and urban fashion.
We shopped among displayed aloha shirts, t-shirts and home goods that made us feel inspired and happy. Happy being the cue for ordering a shave ice. The Local Hawaii, residing in the other half of the mixed use space is also designed to bring people together. The Local Hawaii serves shave ice made with fruit grown in the Hawaiian Islands plus craft sodas and coffee locally sourced as well. The shave ice was so delicious, pure and full of pleasure that time flew by and it’s clear why.
